GRAND PARIS CONTRARY TO WHAT HAS BEEN ANNOUNCED THE END OF DIESEL WILL NOT BE FOR 2024

Contrary to what the mayor of Paris Anne Hidalgo announced in 2018, it is difficult to imagine that the end of diesel in the capital and in the low emission zone (ZFE) could be possible by 2024. In question? The recent one-year postponement of the ban on Crit’air 3 vehicles, induces a postponement of the entire schedule initially defined.

An untenable schedule. While diesel vehicles – the most recent of which carry the Crit’air 2 sticker – were to be permanently banned from the capital and the low-emissions zone of the Paris conurbation in 2024, many wonders if this project will be possible in time. and in time. According to information from Le Monde, the calendar cannot indeed “be kept”.

THE OBJECTIVE CANNOT BE ACHIEVED

A postponement denounced by David Belliard, the deputy mayor of Paris in charge of mobility, who has “no competence” to oppose it. This one is held by the Métropole du Grand Paris (MGP), where this change of calendar seems to be formalized. “Unfortunately, the objective of leaving diesel in 2024 cannot be met”, confirms Daniel Guiraud, the vice president of the MGP in charge of ecological transition and air quality.

For the moment, only Crit’4, Crit’5, and unclassified vehicles are prohibited within the perimeter of the ZFE. And while it was planned to ban Crit’air 3 vehicles on July 1, 2022 (i.e. diesel from before 2010 and petrol cars from before 2006), the Métropole du Grand Paris decided to postpone this ban for one year.

An unfortunate setback for environmentalists and all those who have the ambition to ban diesel vehicles from the city centers of major French cities. And above all a setback that induces a delay in the entire Crit’air sticker progressive calendar project, with the eventual objective of reaching 100 million clean vehicles by 2030.

However, it was a question of being exemplary, with a view to the holding of the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Paris in 2024. “More than ever, the year 2024 gives us the responsibility of being an exemplary city on the ecological level”, also informed the Respire association on this subject, explaining that this exemplarity had to “go through the end of diesel in Paris, the main emitter of nitrogen dioxide (NO2)”

The association also recalls that, since 2020, “95% of the inhabitants of the Ile-de-France region have been exposed to excesses of the WHO thresholds”, while “the health risks of this pollutant are proven and indisputable” and considers that “no less than 2,575 deaths could be avoided each year in Paris” if diesel vehicles were banned from the metropolitan ZFE.
